Laberinto - Vistalago Mezcla Tinta 2017
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
The 2017 Vistalago Mezcla Tinta is a blend of 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Syrah from a plot planted at 600 meters in altitude on colluvial stony soils and cropped from a warmer year, which meant the wine reached 13.7% alcohol. All the grapes fermented together—destemmed and crushed—in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. Winemaker and proprietor Rafael Tirado wants this to show more of the style of the Merlot from his property and the red Laberinto to showcase the character of Cabernet Franc. The place is quite adequate for Merlot, with deeper volcanic soils and a cool climate, and even in this warmer year, it has freshness and acidity. It has some of that blood-like character from the cool-climate Merlot that is also noticeable on the palate. I wouldn't say this is a warm vintage at all. Superb. 6,000 bottles were filled in February 2019.
